I was born in Africa
With the spirit of a fighter
Through thick and thin I stayed strong
The fighter in me is always alive
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.
Growing up wasn’t a smooth journey
Struggling through the hood
Walking many kilometres to school
Still I never gave up
I’m like a cat with nine lives
When you think I give up I rise again
I’m stronger than you can ever imagine
Mentally I’m a winner
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high
I’ll always rise
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll rise.
Overseas overland
Over mountains and in the wild
I’ll be great and I’ll be strong
I’m an African child
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Living each day with terror and fear
Still I rise
in the midst of great scam
In the midst of subsidy removal
In the midst of taking my people for granted
Still I rise
Does my naughtiness offend you?
Don’t you take it awful hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Digging’ in my own back yard.
Out of the huts of history’s shame
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
Growing in a country that promises nothing
Still I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
An african child and will always rise
And forever I’ll rise
Just like my forefathers did
During the period of the great slave trade
When they were treated like sh*t
I’ll rise
Black is a unique colour
Mix all the colours of these world together
It surely will give you black
Just to show how strong I am
I’m an African
Will forever be African
No matter where I find myself
I’ll always represent Africa
